The Indian movie industry, popularly know as Bollywood, is reputed with one of the most remarkable histories in film and cinema today. And it has produced world renowned actors and actresses. A lot of it screen stars, like the veteran Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, are legendary. Some of their classic films are masterpieces that will be forever be etched in our memories.

Artistically they are flawless and historically they are highly regarded as the best movies Bollywood has ever produced.

5. Anand—1971.

This heart wrenching movie was Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Starring the legendary Rajesh Khanna, who was called the first real superstar of Indian movies.  Also starring isscreen Icon Amitabh Bachchan. Also starring Sumita Sanyal and Ramesh Deo, this is touching film follows the story of a terminally ill man who wishes to live  his life to the fullest before death comes for him. His story is narrated by his best friend. It was a big hit and continues to resonate it’s pace setting quality for others to emulate (if they can).

4. Mughal-E-Azam—1960

One of the greatest movies ever in India.  Actors Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala, Dilip Kumar and Durga Khote put in an incredible performance where  a Royal Prince in the 16th century falls in love with a commoner who happens to be a court dancer in the King’s palace. He now has to fight his father the emperor who is against the relationship. This really good,   classic love story, scores a winner.

3. Sholay—1975

Sholay took 2 and half years to film and starred some of the greatest actors and in Indian cinema. This movie that became a landmark tells a story of a retired police chief called Thakur Baldev Singh, portrayed excellently by  Sanjeev Kumar,  who plans to stop a terrible and murderous  bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). He asks and gets help from two charismatic lesser criminals, Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra). And a heart racing battle of mind body and heart ensues. This movie happens to be the highest grossing Bollywood movieever produced. Also starring a young Hema Malni, five years before she married her Sholay co-star Dharmendra. 

Personally, this is my favorite Bollywood film ever. Excellently scripted,  superbly acted and filled with songs that stay in your heart for a long long time.

2. Guide —1965

This Super Romantic movie Directed by Vijay Anand, stars Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Leela Chitnis and Anwar Hussain. It tells a story of a young man who works as a  tour guide. He meets and falls in love with a married woman. And through his love,  he helps her discover happiness and joy by helping her rediscover her strong love for song and dance. Yes I know,  it sounds beautiful, but a bit corny right?  But it is far more remarkabke that the synopsis suggests. A real romantic classic.

This is a critically acclaimed classic that stars Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar.  Powerful performances make this story about a woman living and raising her sons in poverty a true masterpiece of Indian Cinema.  The embattled family go through  many tough struggles and challenges, But somehow, no matter the trial, their strong mother sticks to her morals and pulls them through it.  It’s a must see for Indian film fans.

It takes a lot to set the pace for others to follow. But most modern Bollywood movies would not have found  easier to build up their success and pedigree, if it weren’t for the classics.
