However you look at it, the cost of a movie can never guarantee it’s Box office gross. 4. Justice league : DC and Warner Bros got together in a grossly expensive  attempt to break the super hero movie dominance of fierce rivals Marvel. But relatively speaking, it was a failure. Even with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman  teaming up, the combination  could not really save the day.

The movie cost $300 million to make,  but only made $657 million at the box office. It is rumored that they needed to make at least $750 million Just to break even.  The movie was poorly received compared to its Marvel counterparts. And critics tore it to pieces. However I personally consider it one of my favorite super hero movies ever.

A little silly at times, it lacked the gripping intensity of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Nor did it have the unique intrigue of Wonder Woman.

3.Cleopatra: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton star in this 1963 Hollywood classic that cost $340 million. This figure is adjusted for inflation.

This mega expensive piece of cinema cost a whopping $412 million. The blockbuster was filmed in Hawaii, California, UK and Puerto Rico. Lavish special effects and costly thrills made this a real money gobbler.

Although it had mixed reviews, it stumped critics and delightful fans as it made $1 billion dollars worldwide box office  gross. For playing the delightful Captain Jack Sparrow this time,  Johnny Depp was paid $55.5 million dollars. Well deserved I must say.

A lot of big budget movies with heavy weight casts of A listers have been able to pull off big returns at the US box office, after gargantuan production costs. You just saw the top 31 most expensive movies of all time.
