If you think making a successful film is easy,  then try making a scripted home video and see how many people will pay good money to see it. Hey!  Maybe you might get lucky. The producers of the biggest Hollywood movie flops of all time certainly thought they would. But things pretty much went downhill; real fast, for the ten unfortunate candidates here.
Getting it right in the movie industry has never been easy. Many times, projects you expect to bomb,  end up doing well and others you’d expect to do well end up as flops. The thing is,  it’s not always an exact science
 The right formula for cinematic success is not an open secret(or even a closed one). So many things can simply go wrong even when you do everything right.
As a matter of fact, it doesn’t even matter how big a movie budget or how many A list actors it showcases. The truth is, when a movie fails to make its production Budget,  then its flop.
There have been so many box office bombs in  Hollywood movie history—too many to list here actually, So we’re just going to focus on the 10 greatest Hollywood movie fails of all time.
To be completely honest with you, I love some of the movies on the list, Infact one of them in particular, which stars a popular  action movie heroine, is among my favorite films of the last two decades.
But I guess others don’t share my enthusiasm, since of course,  that movie bombed so badly, it irreparably ruined the careers of many cast and crew—no kidding.
And now I present to you the kings and Queens of  world wide box office flops.These are movies that were designed to be blockbuster movies,  but ended up the direct opposite.
10. Mars needs Mums. (2011) Loss: $141 million

This movie is probably the biggest animation box office flops ever.  With a huge budget of $175 million this poorly shot film made only a paltry $39 million.

9. Sahara. (2005). Loss: $145 million

Even big name stars like Mathew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz could not save this movie from bombing. Based on a bestselling book Sahara,  there was absolutely nothing best selling about this comedy adventure. With a scary budget of $241 million,  it only managed to make $119 million.

8. Adventures of Pluto Nash. (2002). Loss: $145.9 million

Eddie Murphy used to be one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. But in recent years his movie career has plummeted to non existence. This Pluto Nash fiasco amongst other movies was largely responsible for this. To be fair to the critics and movie goers, this movie was absolutely horrible. It made $7.1 million on a $120 million budget.

7.  The Alamo. (2004) Loss: $147 million

This is a war film based on the Alamo battle during the Texas revolution. Set in the 1860’s Mexico. This movie remake of highly a successful 1960’s film did not live up to its predecessor’s success. In fact it was a mess. It earned only $25.8 million in revenues on a $145 million budget.

6. Cutthroat Island. (1995) Loss: $148 million.

This is the movie that almost destroyed the lucrative Pirate movie genre. It comes in at number 6 on our list of the biggest Hollywood and most expensive movie flops ever. One of the greatest female action stars could not save this strangely entertaining Pirate movie from complete failure. With an estimated loss of $148 million on a $115 million budget. 

5. Tomorrow Land. (2015) Loss: $155 million.
Poorly advertised, and hit with a half a year delay in release, Disney movie Tomorowland which had a production budget of $200 million, was full of potential, but turned out a huge disappointment for fans. Even Oscar winning silver haired Alister George Clooney starring,  could not save this movie losing $155 million.
4. Pan.  2015. Loss: $155 million
Hugh Jackman played a beautiful Captain Hook but that didn’t save the iconic story or make it fare well at the box office. Fans just couldn’t accept the altered story line,  and combined with delayed release dates,  and slot of other unseen setbacks, it lost $155 million on a $150 million budget.
3. 47 Ronin. Loss $158 million.
Unfortunately, this is actually a very gripping movie. But the fact that it had already been filmed twice in its country of origin, and was released alongside some incredible competition like The Hobbit sequel and Wolf of Wall Street, even bankable leading man Keanu Reeves couldn’t save it from landing in the biggest Hollywood movie flops of all time with  a $158 million
2. John Carter.  2012  Loss: $200 million

It appears that when Disney loses,  it loses big. Mega budget Sci-fi film John Carter, really looked like a winner. But it is now considered a one of the biggest Hollywood movie bombs ever. It’s massive production costs, cinematography and special effects certainly made it interesting, but not nearly enough to make it worth much in the eyes of movie goers. It lost $200 million.

Another mega loss for Disney. Delayed releases, an onset death and the films excruciating length helped make this big budget project number one of the biggest Hollywood movie flops of all time. Co-Starring Johnny Depp, this violence filled offering lost $200 million at the box office.
All these loses must be making your head spin! Trust me, for those who incurred them,  it was a much worse experience. Quite life altering for some actually. That’s what you get from the unpredictable and often precarious world of the Hollywood box office.
